Estuaries west of New Orleans have plantation homes (see below for swamp tours) The city's most famous street. Strip joints, bars and souvenir shops and drunken tourists all night long. Stop for music and a drink at Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop at 941, Old Absinthe Bar at 400 or Rhytms at 227
 Cajun Country  Cemeteries  French Quarter

The heart of New Orleans, le Vieux Carrre, is a beautiful, and a tacky area at the same time (try Bourbon St). Lacy ironwork balconies, cobbled courtyards, the atmosphere is unbeatable. Wander around and explore and enjoy. Get up early stay up all night

Upton district with ornate antebellum homes offers another side of New Orleans.Writer Anne Rice lives here. The 1941 replica of Tara, the house in Gone with the Wind, is at 5705 St Charles Avenue

The main historic square on the waterfront in the French quarter. St Louis Cathedral, State Museum in Cabildo building and Pontalba Buildings and Cafe du Monde line the square

The famous carnival of New Orleans dates from 1740s and is held yearly in late February. The main Tuesday event is preceded by open to all masked ball in the Spanish Plaza the night before and with two weeks of processions, parties and balls.
