Catalina Island Attractions and Activities 
 Airport-in-the-Sky  Avalon  Botanical Garden
The island's airport was built on top of the mountain in 1946. Mostly private planes land but also a daily service from San Diego.  The island's only city covers about one square mile and the only place where you can own property. Departure point to mainland and Two Harbors. Casino The garden next to the Wrigley memorial contains plants from the desserts of the world, cacti and other exotic species. End of Avalon Canyon Road.
 Buffaloes Casino Conservancy

A herd of 300 American bison roam in the wilderness of the island. Originally filmmaker William Farnum brought 14 animals in 1924 for filming of The Vanishing American.

 

 

Completed in 1929 this is the landmark of Avalon and has the accustics that were later copied in New York City's Radio City Music Hall. Finnish artist John Gabriel Beckman of the Chinese Theater Hollywood fame painted the murals. Island Museum, Art Gallery and Ballroom are worth visit. Tours daily.

Santa Catalina Island Conservancy owns and keeps 88 percent of the island in its natural state. Conservancy House in downtown Avalon at 125 Claressa Avenue

 Holly Hill House  Two Harbors  Wrigley Memorial
Completed in 1890, the Victorian house named the Look Out Cottage sits high above Avalon. Contact the Catalina Museum for visits and guided tours

A small village of fewer than 200 year-round residents. Access by boat from Avalon or directly from San Pedro and Long Beach. Catalina Cruise Line 1 800 228-2546 and The Shoreliner from Avalon. Catalina Safari Bus makes daily trips from Avalon. 310 510-2800 Chewing gum millionaire William Wrigley Jr first visited the island in 1919. He later bought it and lived there. The memorial is a 2 and half km walk uphill from downtown Avalon. The memorial is built of material from the island. Botanical garden in front of it.

EuroUSA FISHING
You can rent tackle from Joe's Rent-A-Boat on the green Pleasure Pier in Avalon 310 510-0455. Joe's will sell a valid California fishing license. Also available at High Trade Traders 415 Crescent Avenue 310 510-1612. Captain John Talsky has custom fishing charters around the island, 310 510-0455/2274. Maybe you catch tuna, barracuda, bonito, halibut or marlin. These are big fish.

EuroUSA HIKING and WALKING
Best way to see the island by far. If you go outside habited areas carry water and a big stick with you for wild boar, rattle snakes etc. EuroUSA recommends the following hikes (some of it strenuous): Jail Road/Indian Trail to Stage Road, Hermit Gulch Trail/Canyon Road/Divide Road and Renton Mine Road/Mt. Ada Road to East Mountain

EuroUSA HUNTING
Mule deer and wild boar can be hunted from mid-October to mid-December. Must have prearranged license before arriving on the island. California G-14 zone either-sex tag available from California Department of Fish and Game in Sacramento. Only rifles allowed. You are required to wear a blaze orange vest.

Joe's Rent-A-Boat on the green Pleasure Pier in Avalon 310 510-0455 has escorted snorkeling trips.
